Bright Start for Stallions
The Stallions have kicked off their Johnny Warren Cup campaign with an impressive 2-0 win against
the Bankstown City Lions.
The Stallions took a while to find their feet early on, but after surviving a Lions’ onslaught,
finally started to threaten the opposition’s defence.
Off-season recruit Ante Deur and young striker Stefan Donevski went close for the Stallions during
the middle stages of the first half, in what was shaping as an end-to-end encounter.
Matthew Gordon, who was a revelation up front and out wide for the Stallions last season, continued
on from his 2007 form with an impressive strike from an acute angle just before the break to open
the scoring.
Not long after half time Gordon turned provider, laying up Deur to slot home and double the
Stallions lead.
Both sides took advantage of the opportunity to give some of their youngsters a run as well as test
out different combinations.
For the Stallions, up and comers such as Zac
Cairncross and Dominic Arcella were given a chance to test their skills in the top grade, with coach
David Barrett expected to give more young guns an opportunity throughout the remainder of the
pre-season competition.
The Stallions next Johnny Warren Cup match is against Sydney Olympic at Seymour Shaw Park, kick off
is 6.30pm.
