MISSED OPPORTUNITIES COST STALLIONS

The Marconi Stallions have let Manly United off the hook in a pulsating  1-1 draw at Marconi Stadium on Saturday night.

The Stallions were disappointed they didn’t put the visitors to the sword, especially considering they created more than enough opportunities in what was an often exciting contest.

United goalkeeper Brad Swancott though was in fine form and his efforts ultimately kept United in the contest.

The tone of the match was set early, when Ben Vidaic, who was a constant threat to the United defence, found himself through on goals, only to be denied by Swancott.

Only minutes later, somewhat against the run of play, the always-dangerous Robbie Cattanach put the Northern-Sydney outfit in the lead when he found himself in space inside the box in the 18th minute.

The match was turned on its head in the 30th minute when Luke Reading was given his marching orders after bringing down Vidaic in the box. Skipper Nahuel Arrarte had no problem slotting past Swancott to square the match at one apiece.

The Stallions made the most of their one man advantage in the second half, creating one chance after another, but a combination of poor finishing and some fine goalkeeping kept the scores level.

Alex Canak continued on from where he left last week, with another live-wire performance and thought he had secured the three points for the Stallions, only to be called off-side in the 80th minute. Substitute Daniel Ott, who helped seal the win against Penrith-Nepean the week prior, almost snatched it for the home-side in the dying stages but his shot skewed wide.

Despite lacking the finishing the touch, impressive for the Stallions was their ball movement, which was much more fluid than in their first round clash. Missing the experience of injured central defender Andrea Merrenda and fielding a relatively young back-line, the Stallions defence held-up well against an impressive attack which included the likes of Cattanach, Joey Schrippa and Josh Sama.
