NEW YEAR, NEW LOOK, NEW ATTITUDE

Merenda, who has had stints at Serie C1 clubs Prosseso, Gualdo, Montova and Lecco, is hoping his time at Marconi will help springboard him to the A-league.

“I’ve got plenty of faith in Andrea, he is very good on the ball and brings plenty of experience to our defence. I’ve got no doubt he can play in the A-League and I’d be very surprised if he doesn’t get picked up,” Sterrey said.

“I think the squad can learn a lot from someone like Andrea. Over the years I’ve had a lot of experience with Italian [imports], I’ve seen a lot of them, but Andrea is definitely one of the special ones.”

Merenda is just one of the many new faces to link with the Stallions for the 2009 season, joining the likes of Marconi junior Erick Anabalon, who returns to the Stallions’ stable after a stint at Penrith, three young Ivory Coast players, and Iraq international Ali Abbas Al-Hilfi.

Sterrey is confident that his new imports are ready to make a big impact in the NSW Premier League and combined with the young talent at his disposal, including Umut Tokdogan, Tim McGowan, Daniel Ott, Graz Trimboli and Stefan Heleta, all promoted from last season’s Grade 20s, the Stallions coach promised that the Stallions will pose a much bigger threat in 2009.

“From the games I saw last year, the team I saw out there had no passion,” Sterrey said.

“We’ve had to have a clean out and I’m confident that the players we’ve got here, want to be here and are capable of playing in the A-league or overseas.

“There’s a freshness about Marconi now and the players are all showing plenty of enthusiasm, which is a good sign.”

The Stallions will be skippered by last season’s most consistent player, Nahuel Arrarte, while Vuko Tomasevic, James Chronopoulos, Cem Akili, Chris Nunes, Wade Oostendorp and Matt Gordon remain from last season’s first grade squad.

Other new recruits include last season’s leading scorer in the Super League, Alex Kanak, Ben Vidaic and 19-year-old excitement machine Lenox Tweneboa.
