STALLIONS' RUN COMES TO AN END

An injury time strike has ended the Marconi Stallions unbeaten start to the season away to Sydney United on Sunday.

Substitute Elsid Barkhousir was the man of the moment for United, his goal sending the enthusiastic Edensor Park faithful into raptures.

It was a harsh end to a brave performance for the Stallions who defended bravely in the last 20 minutes to stave off a relentless United attack.

It was different in the first half, with the visitors not afraid to take the game to the league leaders.

The opening chance of the match fell to the Stallions' Ali Al-Hilfi, who turned a free-kick just wide of the goal from outside the box. Not long later Ben Vidaic was fouled in the box, leaving skipper Nauhel Arrarte to convert from the spot.

In the 30’ minute Marconi were unlucky not to have doubled their lead when, after a series of near misses in the box, it all ended with Vidaic toe-poking the ball towards goal only to see it take a deflection and finish just wide of the post.

A few minutes later United went close to squaring the ledger after Mitchell Thompson sent in a beautiful cross from left to reach a charging Ante Milicic, but his powerful attempt from close range was off target.

In the second-half the early chances again fell to the visitors. Firstly, Vuko Tomasevic superbly set up Alexander Canak unmarked in front of the goalkeeper, but his finish didn't trouble the keeper. Al-Hilfi then had an opportunity to double the Stallions' tally but he was unable to control his shot.

Sydney United equalised in the 67th minute after the Stallions failed to clear the ball, which fell to David Zdrillic who had no problem slotting home.

With the home-crowd cheering them home, the Stallions were always going to face an uphill battle to keep United at bay. In the end it was left to Barkhousir to steal all three points for United when he netted in the 93rd minute.
