STALLIONS STUNG IN TWO MINUTE BLAST

A two-minute lapse in concentration has cost the Marconi Stallions their first win of the season, against the West Sydney Berries, at home on Saturday night.

In the end, the home side had to settle for a 2-2 draw, a disappointing result considering the Stallions dominated virtually all of the first half and created some clear-cut chances in the second.

But it was the final two minutes of the opening stanza which turned the match, when the Berries’ Nicolo Sama and John Tsironis got the visitors back into the contest.

In the 45th minute Sama was given too much room on the edge of the box and his low drive was too good for Stallions custodian Cem Akilli. Then with virtually the last kick of the half, Tsironis was on the end of a wicked cross by Buan Jones, and his outstretched boot did enough to squeeze the ball in off the near post.

The Stallions looked deflated as they walked off at the break, understandably too, considering they controlled most of the half. Looking determined and disciplined with their passing and movement, the home side secured the opener through Tallan Martin, when he nodded home at the near post in the 32nd minute.

Not long after, Ante Deur was on the end of a pinpoint Vuko Tomasevic free kick, his well directed glanced header giving Hamish McClean no chance.

Although the second half didn’t provide any goals, it was not without its moments of drama, particularly in the last ten minutes, when both sides had their chances to steal all three points.

Sama looked like he had made a name for himself, but after doing all the hard work and rounding the keeper, his attempt on goal, surprisingly hit the side netting.

Stallions substitute Tolgay Ozbey, who sparked the home side when he was introduced midway through the second half, created two wonderful opportunities in the dying stages, but his good work was let down by a lack of composure in front of goals.

Both chances fell to Stefan Donevski, the first, after the ball skidded across the face of goal, with the diminutive striker unable to slide the ball into an open net. The second was from similar position, but this time it fell on his left foot, and his scuffed shot went well over the bar.
