STALLIONS DOMINATE LOCAL DERBY

The Marconi Stallions have turned in arguably their most complete performance of the season, with a 5-1 rout of the Bonnyrigg White Eagles on Saturday night.

The Stallions looked on the ball from the outset and didn't have to wait long to get on the scoresheet.

In the 5th minute Ben Vidaic picked out Ali Al-Hilfi out wide on the left, with the Stallions’ Iraqi import droving a powerful effort across the face of goal from an acute angle, to open the scoring.

The Stallions nearly doubled their lead – via a swift counter-attack – as a Bonnyrigg set-piece in the attacking third broke down. Kader Toure’s speed had the White Eagles defenders on the back-foot as the Cote D’Ivoire import played a defence splitting pass into the path of Alexander Canak. The former Liverpool Bossy midfielder had only Akbal to beat, though the White Eagles shot-stopper stood tall to thwart a certain goal.

The Stallions did double their advantage on 38’ minutes when a lapse in concentration by the White Eagles central defence allowed Toure the chance to sneak in and superbly slot past Akbal in goals.

The Stallions came out firing in the opening stages of the second half.  Al-Hilfi’s delicate touches, mixed with Toure’s trickery, twice presented the vistors with goal-scoring opportunities inside of the opening 3’ minutes.

Not long after, they put the game beyond doubt when Vamara Diarra was the quickest to re-act during a goalmouth scramble.

A blunder in the Bonnyrigg defence led to the Stallions fourth goal, with captain Nahuel Arrarte on hand to coolly lob the ball over an exposed Ali Akbal.

Bonnyrigg got a goal back in the 73rd minute when a poorly dealt with free-kick by the Stallions defence allowed Simonovic a clear shot on goal from the edge of the penalty-area.

The win leaves the Stallions entrenched in the top five, with Coach Lee Sterrey confident his side can improve even further.

"Very happy with the win – to come here and get a win is fantastic, especially to score five goals in the process,” he said.

“The Club has really supported me this season with the ideas I put forward. We haven’t gone out of our budget, though we have managed to bring a number of players into the team that we believe can really kick-start their careers, and also help this club win some silverware."
